Overview

Primal Energy is a species-specific resource that triggers Primal Reversion for Kyogre and Groudon, transforming them into Primal Kyogre or Primal Groudon for 8 hours. There is no numeric Trainer-level requirement to collect or spend Primal Energy under the current leveling system; you only need a non-Shadow Kyogre or Groudon and 400 matching Primal Energy for its first transformation.

Each species maintains its own separate energy balance on its Pokémon summary screen rather than inside your Item Bag, and neither balance can substitute for Mega Energy, Fusion Energy, or Crowned Sword and Crowned Shield energy. Repeated reversions build that individual Pokémon's Primal Level, shortening its rest period, reducing the energy needed to revert early, and improving catch bonuses while the form is active.

How to get it

  • Defeat Primal Kyogre or Primal Groudon in Primal Raids to earn 60 to 100 matching Primal Energy based on clear speed, or complete event research that awards it. Standard 5-star Kyogre and Groudon raids do not award Primal Energy.

  • After registering Primal Kyogre or Primal Groudon in your Pokédex, walk any Kyogre or Groudon as your Buddy to earn 100 matching Primal Energy per 20 km walked (or per 10 km while your Buddy is Excited).

How to use it

  1. Open a non-Shadow Kyogre or Groudon in your Pokémon storage, or select it from a Raid Lobby or Battle Party prep screen, and tap Primal Reversion.

  2. Pay 400 matching Primal Energy for that individual's first Primal Reversion. Subsequent reversions on that same Pokémon are free after its rest period finishes, or cost at most 80, 40, or 20 energy depending on its Primal Level and remaining cooldown.

Worth knowing

Primal Reversion and Mega Evolution share a single active transformation slot: activating another Mega or Primal form immediately ends your current one.

Kyogre Primal Energy and Groudon Primal Energy cannot be exchanged for each other, nor can they substitute for Mega Energy, Fusion Energy, or Crowned Sword and Crowned Shield energy. Trading a Kyogre or Groudon also resets its Primal Level to zero.

Plan the active form around the group

Primal Reversion boosts allied attacks in Raid Battles and Gym battles differently from standard Mega Evolutions. Whereas most Mega-Evolved Pokémon only boost allies while actively fighting on the battlefield, Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon grant their damage bonus to other Trainers' Pokémon simply by being present anywhere in your six-Pokémon raid party—even while waiting on the bench or after fainting.

Allied moves that match the Primal form's three weather-associated types deal 30% more damage (a 1.3 modifier), while all other move types deal 10% more damage (a 1.1 modifier). Multiple Mega or Primal damage modifiers do not stack; if more than one applies, only the highest multiplier takes effect.

Each Primal form supports a three-type weather trio both in battle and when catching Pokémon. Primal Groudon boosts Fire-, Grass-, and Ground-type attacks (sunny/clear weather), while Primal Kyogre boosts Water-, Electric-, and Bug-type attacks (rainy weather). While either Primal form is active on the map, catching any Pokémon that shares one of its three boosted types also awards bonus catch Candy, plus bonus catch XP and an increased chance to receive Candy XL at higher Primal Levels.

You can have only one active Mega-Evolved or Primal-Reverted Pokémon at a time. Activating a new Mega or Primal transformation immediately ends the existing one, so coordinate your choice with your own raid party, the attack types other Trainers plan to bring, and the Pokémon types you intend to catch afterward.

First reversion, rest periods and capacity

An individual Kyogre or Groudon requires 400 matching Primal Energy for its first Primal Reversion. Unlocking Primal Reversion on one Kyogre or Groudon applies only to that specific Pokémon; any other Kyogre or Groudon in your storage still requires 400 energy for its own initial reversion, and trading a previously reverted Kyogre or Groudon resets its Primal Level to zero for the recipient.

Once an individual has reverted at least once, waiting until its rest period finishes allows it to revert again for 0 Primal Energy. If you revert it before the rest timer expires, the energy cost scales down linearly in proportion to the remaining cooldown time.

Primal Reversion lasts 8 hours, and each individual Pokémon can advance its Primal Level at most once per calendar day by reverting. There are three Primal Level tiers: Base Level (1 reversion) sets a 7-day rest period with an 80-energy maximum cooldown cost and grants +1 catch Candy for matching types; High Level (7 reversions) shortens the rest period to 5 days with a 40-energy maximum cost and adds +50 catch XP and a 10% Candy XL chance bonus; Max Level (30 reversions) reduces the rest period to 3 days with a 20-energy maximum cost and upgrades catch bonuses to +2 Candy, +100 XP, and a 25% Candy XL chance bonus.

Unlike select Mega Evolutions that received a fourth Super Max Level tier in February 2026, Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon cap at Max Level.

Kyogre and Groudon each have a separate hard cap of 9,999 Primal Energy. Because Primal Energy is stored on the species summary screen rather than inside your Item Bag, a full Item Bag never blocks you from earning Primal Energy, and purchasing Item Bag upgrades does not raise the 9,999 cap.

However, completing a Primal Raid while already at 9,999 matching energy awards 0 additional energy. Without event research, earning the initial 400 energy requires 5 to 7 Primal Raids depending on how quickly your group defeats the boss: clearing in 30 seconds or less awards 100 energy, 31 to 75 seconds awards 90, 76 to 150 seconds awards 80, 151 to 225 seconds awards 70, and 226 to 300 seconds awards 60.

Prepare before activating the form

After you defeat Primal Kyogre or Primal Groudon in a Primal Raid, the boss reverts to its ordinary form before you start an encounter to catch it. You must then collect at least 400 matching Primal Energy to activate Primal Reversion yourself. Always power up your Kyogre or Groudon before reverting it, because standard power-ups are disabled while a Pokémon is in its Primal form. Shadow Kyogre and Shadow Groudon cannot undergo Primal Reversion at all unless Purified.

Once active, Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon can fight in Raid Battles, Gym attacks, Team GO Rocket battles, and Trainer Battles against friends, and can be activated directly from the Raid Lobby or Battle Party prep screen, but they cannot defend Gyms and are normally barred from the GO Battle League.

Under the February 2026 Mega Evolution update, Primal Kyogre and Primal Groudon cannot break shields when the boss becomes enraged in Super Mega Raids—only Mega-Evolved Pokémon can break those shields. Furthermore, while Mega Raids and Super Mega Raids use Link Charges for entry, Primal Raids continue to use a standard Raid Pass, Premium Battle Pass, or Remote Raid Pass.
