Max Battle attacker FAQ

What is the best Steel-type Max Battle attacker?

Crowned Sword Zacian leads this selection with Metal Claw and Behemoth Blade, dealing 320 damage per Max Attack under the default settings.

These picks use the default ranking and stay fixed when you change the table settings.

What is the best Steel-type attacker without Gigantamax?

Crowned Sword Zacian leads this selection with Metal Claw and Behemoth Blade, dealing 320 damage per Max Attack under the default settings.

This excludes Gigantamax forms. Other eligible forms remain included; use the table settings to exclude Crowned Pokémon or Eternatus too.

What is the best Steel-type attacker without legacy moves?

Crowned Sword Zacian leads this selection with Metal Claw and Behemoth Blade, dealing 320 damage per Max Attack under the default settings.

This pick is calculated from all eligible non-legacy movesets, including alternatives to the moves shown in the default table. It can help you avoid needing an Elite TM for the recommended Fast Attack.

How are these attackers ranked?

The default ranking uses Level 40 Pokémon, perfect IVs and level-3 Max Attacks against a neutral target, with no weather boost. Only released Pokémon are included.

The score is damage from one Max Attack, not DPS. A real boss’s Defense and weaknesses change the damage and may change the order. This ranking does not estimate total battle time, faints or team performance.

Why do some attackers use a Fast Attack of another type?

Max Attack damage determines the ranking. When movesets deal equal damage, faster Max Meter generation breaks the tie. The recommended Fast Attack therefore helps charge the meter; it is not necessarily the hardest-hitting Fast Attack. The charging comparison uses the same neutral target.

For Dynamax Pokémon, the Fast Attack normally determines the Max Attack type; Hidden Power produces Max Strike. Gigantamax Pokémon have a fixed G-Max Attack. Crowned Pokémon and Eternatus also use fixed special attacks. Changing their Fast Attack does not change that attack’s type.

Does Max Attack level matter?

Yes. Use the Max Attack level setting to compare levels 1, 2 and 3 before investing. This changes the attack’s power, independently of the Pokémon’s level. The default cards and FAQ always use Max Attack level 3.

Should I build only the highest-ranked attacker?

No. This list helps choose damage dealers. A Max Battle team can also need Pokémon that resist the boss’s attacks or restore HP. Use the boss’s Max Battle counters page to compare attackers, tanks and healers for that encounter.

Example: Gigantamax Charizard counters, tanks and healers

What does the asterisk beside a move mean?

An asterisk marks a legacy move, which may require an event, an Elite TM or another special method. Some legacy moves cannot be taught with an Elite TM.

How are tiers assigned?

Tiers group attackers by similar scores, emphasizing differences near the top. We use eight groups, labelled SS, S, A, B, C, D, E and F, when there are enough distinct scores; otherwise, fewer tiers are used. Group sizes are determined by the scores, not fixed rank cutoffs. Tiers update with the simulation settings and stay the same when you sort or change pages.
