Overview

Volt Fusion Energy is a dedicated currency that fuses Kyurem with Zekrom to form Black Kyurem. Tracked on Kyurem's summary screen without taking up Item Bag space, it is completely separate from the Blaze Fusion Energy used for White Kyurem, as well as Solar and Lunar Fusion Energy.

Once fused, Black Kyurem remains in that form indefinitely until you manually separate it, and you can maintain multiple fused Black Kyurem at the same time if you have enough Pokémon and resources. Because every fusion requires the full 1,000 Volt Fusion Energy and Candy cost again, carefully select the base Kyurem you want to battle with before fusing.

How to get it

  • Defeat Black Kyurem in Fusion Raids when it is featured in events.

  • Complete selected event-exclusive Special or Timed Research tasks that award Volt Fusion Energy; other Fusion Energy types cannot be substituted.

How to use it

  1. Ensure both an eligible Kyurem and Zekrom are in your Pokémon storage, open Kyurem's summary screen, and tap Fuse next to Zekrom.

  2. Black Kyurem stays fused indefinitely until you tap Separate, which returns both Kyurem and Zekrom to your storage at no cost.

Worth knowing

Teach or verify the Charged Attack Glaciate on your base Kyurem before fusing so that it transforms into Black Kyurem's signature move, Freeze Shock.

Separating Black Kyurem is free, but fusing again requires the full 1,000 Volt Fusion Energy, 30 Kyurem Candy, and 30 Zekrom Candy. Unlike Mega or Primal Energy, Volt Fusion Energy cannot be earned by walking with a Buddy.

Choose the primary Pokémon before paying the fusion cost

Black Kyurem inherits its stats and attributes entirely from the base Kyurem rather than the partner Zekrom. Specifically, the fused form takes its IVs, level, Shiny status, and Lucky status from Kyurem, meaning a high-IV or Shiny Zekrom will not pass those qualities onto Black Kyurem.

Any power-ups applied to Black Kyurem while fused stay with the base Kyurem if the pair is later separated, while Zekrom returns at its original level. You can fuse a Kyurem that is currently set as your Buddy—keeping its affection hearts and Candy distance progress intact—but Zekrom cannot be fused while it is your active Buddy.

Separating Black Kyurem costs zero Volt Fusion Energy and zero Candy, but fusing the pair again charges the full 1,000 Volt Fusion Energy, 30 Kyurem Candy, and 30 Zekrom Candy. Performing two separate fusions therefore consumes 2,000 Volt Fusion Energy in total, even when reusing the exact same Kyurem and Zekrom. This sets Pokémon Fusion apart from Mega Evolution, Primal Reversion, and Crowned Sword or Crowned Shield form changes, which have their own rules for subsequent activations.

Fusion, separation, and restrictions

Each fusion requires 1,000 Volt Fusion Energy, 30 Kyurem Candy, and 30 Zekrom Candy. Volt Fusion Energy is stored in its own counter on the Pokémon summary page and does not occupy slots in your Item Bag. You can earn it by defeating Black Kyurem in raids or by completing event research that specifically awards Volt Fusion Energy.

Black Kyurem remains fused until you choose to separate it. Separation returns both Kyurem and Zekrom to your inventory without costing any energy or Candy, though fusing them again requires the full resource payment. Shadow and Purified Pokémon cannot be fused. Furthermore, while fused, Black Kyurem cannot be traded, transferred to the Professor, or sent to Pokémon HOME.

Debut and signature attack

Volt Fusion Energy debuted during Pokémon GO Tour: Unova in February and March 2025—accompanied by brief, now-expired promotional code distributions—and returned during Kyurem Fusion Raid Day on January 10, 2026. It is also scheduled to return in Black Kyurem raids during Pokémon GO Wild Area 2026: Global on November 14–15, 2026.

If your base Kyurem knows the Charged Attack Glaciate prior to fusing, that move automatically becomes Freeze Shock while fused. Always check Kyurem's moveset before spending your Volt Fusion Energy, as fusing a Kyurem without Glaciate will not grant Freeze Shock.

The raid encounter and Freeze Shock

Winning a Black Kyurem raid awards Volt Fusion Energy and an encounter with an ordinary, unfused Kyurem rather than Zekrom or a fused Black Kyurem. Because the base Kyurem determines the fused form's IVs, level, Lucky status, and Shiny appearance, prioritize your best Kyurem for the fusion and keep an extra Zekrom in reserve if you still need a separate Zekrom for raids.

When a Kyurem knowing Glaciate is fused with Zekrom, Glaciate converts into Freeze Shock for as long as the fusion lasts, then reverts to Glaciate if you separate them. Freeze Shock cannot be taught directly to Black Kyurem using either a regular Charged TM or an Elite Charged TM.

Freeze Shock also unlocks an Adventure Effect outside of battle for 5,000 Stardust and 5 Kyurem Candy per 10 minutes. While active, it casts electrically charged ice that prevents wild or raid-encountered Pokémon from moving, jumping, or attacking, and increases your chance of catching them—including when using connected accessory devices such as Pokémon GO Plus +.

You can extend the timer in 10-minute increments up to two hours per activation and up to 24 hours in total, though only one Adventure Effect can be active at a time.
