Overview

The yellow-and-pink 7 km Egg is a Pokémon Egg obtained by opening Gifts rather than spinning PokéStop or Gym Photo Discs, requiring 7 km of walking in a standard Incubator to hatch a Pokémon and earn XP, Stardust, and Candy. Standard 7 km Eggs from friends' Gifts typically feature regional forms or rotating event hatch pools, while Mateo’s once-daily Gift Exchange at the end of a Route awards a 7 km Egg with its own distinct species pool.

Because you can only receive a 7 km Egg if you have both an open regular Egg slot and available space in Pokémon Storage, check your storage before opening a Gift.

How to get it

  • Open Gifts from friends while you have an available regular Egg slot and open space in Pokémon Storage.

  • Complete Mateo’s Gift Exchange at the end of a Route (once per day) while you have an open regular Egg slot and space in Pokémon Storage to potentially receive a 7 km Egg from a distinct Route pool.

How to use it

  1. Place it in an ordinary incubator and walk the displayed distance.

  2. Tap the Egg to inspect its possible hatch pool. Event pools change, so a permanent list of species would become outdated.

Worth knowing

The Gift’s origin can give a hatchling a distant origin location, which may be useful when planning trades.

You cannot normally discard an Egg. Hatching is how you clear its slot.

Baseline hatch rewards

Hatch rewards include the resources listed below as well as the Pokémon that hatches. They are baseline amounts before event changes; the Stardust and Candy amounts are ranges, not promises of the maximum reward.

A Star Piece multiplies hatch Stardust by 1.5×, raising the baseline 800–1,600 Stardust range to 1,200–2,400 Stardust. A Lucky Egg applies a 2× multiplier to XP, doubling the baseline 1,000 XP to 2,000 XP. To receive either bonus, the item must be active at the exact moment the hatch completes and the rewards are granted, so activate your Star Piece or Lucky Egg just before walking the final distance.

The ordinary Candy awarded belongs to the hatched Pokémon’s evolutionary family. Trainers at Level 31 and above can also earn Candy XL as a separate reward (up to 16 Candy XL from a 7 km Egg, averaging roughly 3 Candy XL per hatch), which is not included in the ordinary Candy range below.

What is determined before you hatch

An Egg’s Pokémon species, Individual Values (with a minimum floor of 10 in Attack, Defense, and HP), and Shiny status are locked in at the exact moment you receive the Egg—which for a 7 km Egg is when you open the Gift or complete Mateo’s exchange, not when the friend originally sent the Gift. Waiting to hatch an older Egg during a later event will not change its contents to that new event’s hatch pool.

The geographic origin of the Gift’s Postcard becomes the hatched Pokémon’s catch location. This is especially useful for distance-based trading rewards—such as earning up to 3 bonus Candy and a guaranteed Candy XL when trading two Pokémon whose origins are at least 100 km apart—when you hatch Eggs received from distant friends or Mateo. Always tap an Egg to inspect its specific hatch list rather than assuming every 7 km Egg shares the same pool.

Hatching, storage, and the reward

Open Pokémon Storage, switch to the Eggs tab, select the 7 km Egg, and tap Start Incubation. Walking distance is tracked while the app is open or in the background through Adventure Sync. Eggs cannot be discarded or removed from an Incubator once placed; completing the walk is the only way to clear the slot. Your Egg inventory holds nine regular slots plus three bonus slots reserved strictly for weekly Adventure Sync reward Eggs and 12 km Strange Eggs from Team GO Rocket Leaders.

Because an Egg's contents are fixed upon receipt, seasonal rotations never reroll Eggs already in your inventory. Every hatched Pokémon has a minimum IV floor of 10/10/10 and awards family Candy, Stardust, and XP, plus Candy XL for Trainers at Level 31 or higher. Having a Lucky Egg or Star Piece active when the hatch triggers increases the XP or Stardust earned, and tapping the screen as the hatch animation begins will skip most of the sequence.

Gift planning and hatch rewards

A Gift’s Egg is generated when you open the Gift and receive it. Saving an unopened Gift for an event can therefore differ from saving an already-collected Egg: the old Egg keeps its existing contents. Check the event’s stated Gift-Egg rules before opening.

To receive a 7 km Egg, you must have both an open slot among your nine regular Egg slots and available space in your Pokémon Storage when you open a Gift. The three bonus Egg storage slots cannot hold Gift Eggs, and full Pokémon Storage will prevent an Egg from dropping even if an Egg slot is open. Conversely, if you want to save your open Egg slots for PokéStop Eggs, wait to open Gifts until your nine regular slots are full.

Even when you have room, a Gift is not guaranteed to contain an Egg.

A distant friend’s Gift can produce a hatchling with that Gift’s origin. Hatching it locally does not erase the distant origin, which may help when pairing it with a local Pokémon for distance-based trading rewards. Mateo’s exchange is a separate source with its own possible hatches.

In a standard Incubator, a 7 km Egg requires the full 7 km of walking. Placing it in a Super Incubator applies a 2/3 distance modifier (7 km × 2/3 ≈ 4.67 km), reducing the required walking distance to about 4.67 km before any event hatch-distance bonuses apply. Regardless of which Incubator or distance bonus you use, the XP, Stardust, and Candy rewards remain those of a 7 km Egg.
