Brave Bird+
With an impressive ATK and, more importantly, access to the immensely powerful Brave Bird+, Mega Staraptor flies high atop the Flying-type meta, immediately establishing itself as one of the best in this category. But Mega Staraptor is a Fighting/Flying type, so how does it perform in the Fighting department? And will it remain a top-notch Flying-type attacker? Here's everything to know.
As a Fighting type
Mega Staraptor does not learn any of the Fighting-type Fast Attacks of Pokémon GO in the Main Series Games. Among Charged Attacks, it only learns Close Combat and Focus Blast, with access to the former in Pokémon GO. As such, with a non-existent Fighting-type Fast Attack and an underwhelming Charged Attack, it fails to perform.
As a Flying type
Brave Bird+ propels Mega Staraptor to new heights, positioning itself just behind Mega Rayquaza in DPS. However, the difference between the damage numbers of Mega Rayquaza and Mega Staraptor is a hefty 25%. With only one Mega slot in a Raid battle, Mega Rayquaza should always be preferred. Obviously, if you don't have a good Mega Ray, Mega Staraptor fills in the role well. It's particularly efficient against Bug-type Raid Bosses due to the extra resistance to Bug stemming from the Fighting/Flying combination.
Is Mega Staraptor future proof in Pokémon GO?
Doubtful. If a Flying-type powerhouse like Mega Charizard Y gets a strong +Charged Attack, it will immediately leave Mega Staraptor in the dust. In the same vein, if Mega Salamence is given access to a Flying-type Fast Attack like Air Slash and is complemented with a +Charged Attack like, say, Fly+, it will be lights out for Mega Staraptor again.
Mega Staraptor will remain a solid Flying-type attacker, but its dominance can be challenged. Not to mention, the chance of Mega Rayquaza getting Dragon Ascent+ or even Hurricane+, and making every other Flying Pokémon forgettable, also remains open.
PvP Analysis
🔵 Mega Great League
Mega Staraptor is a glass cannon in the Great League, suffering the same issues it did as regular Staraptor in the non-Mega formats. Brave Bird+ is strong but having a DEF debuff of 3 stages when you're already fragile is a major concern for this Pokémon. Moreover, there are a host of Mega Evolutions that perform better as well. Opponents like Altaria, Mimikyu, Tinkaton, Melmetal, and Mega Sableye stay unbeaten, rendering Mega Staraptor bad against the Steel/Fairy/Dragon core.
🟡 Mega Ultra League
With some extra breathing room, Mega Staraptor is a little better in the Mega Ultra League. It utilizes its spammy and flexible moveset better, although it still faces challenges in the bulk department. Here, it's able to muscle through Melmetal, Jellicent, Blastoise, Shadow Ninetales, and Mega Dragonite. Still, its overall win column is narrow, and it loses more often than not. The best use is to disrupt the opponent by making them use a shield, but at the end of the day, it is an underperforming Mega.
🟣 Mega Master League
Mega Staraptor does a tidy job in the Mega Master League, functioning as a spammy and hard-hitting bird of prey. Its flexible moveset helps Mega Staraptor power through titans like Mega Tyranitar, White Kyurem, Dialga Origin, Crowned Shield Zamazenta, Melmetal, and even Mega Gyarados. While its wins are impressive, one bad habit that doesn't leave Mega Staraptor is losing more than it wins. It goes down to Mega Rayquaza, Primal Groudon, and Primal Kyogre. Joining the list of losses include the Megas of the Pseudo Legendary Dragons, both Mewtwo's Megas, Zacian Crowned Sword, Eternatus, Mega Aggron, and more.
The issue with Mega Staraptor is that you can have only one Mega Evolution per team, and that slot is better served by other Megas.
