PvE Analysis
Recommended moves
- Dragon Attacker:
Dragon Tail
Draco Meteor * - Flying Attacker:
Dragon Tail
Hurricane
An ATK stat of only 299 spells doom for Mega Dragonite's chances in the meta. With its primary usage being as a Dragon-type attacker, Mega Dragonite is unsurprisingly surpassed by the top Dragon Pokémon, including the Mega Evolutions of fellow Dragon-type Pseudo Legendaries.
Let's now see how it actually fares.
🐲 Dragon type
In the fiercely contested Dragon meta, Mega Dragonite performs very similarly to regular Rayquaza in terms of damage output. But when it comes to taking hits and utility, Mega Dragonite is strictly better than Rayquaza due to higher bulk and also the fact that it offers a Mega Boost in Raid battles.
Mega Rayquaza and Eternatus are the leaders in Dragon DPS, so Mega Dragonite can be compared to Mega Salamence, also Pseudo Legendary, a Dragon/Flying type, and both well known for their infamous Draco Meteor + Outrage shenanigans.
That said, Mega Salamence is unanimously stronger, thanks to a higher ATK (310) and more tankiness.
On a pure Dragon basis, even if you choose to ignore the power levels of Mega Rayquaza, top Legendaries, and Shadow Pokémon, other Pseudo Legendary Mega Evolutions like Mega Garchomp, Mega Garchomp Z, and Mega Baxcalibur are all better than Mega Dragonite.
🪽 Flying type
Mega Rayquaza is the table topper and once again, Mega Dragonite's standing calls for a comparison with Mega Salamence.
Both these Pseudo Legendaries lack a Flying-type Fast Move, but Mega Salamence has straightforward perks.
For one, Fly is a better Flying-type Charged Move than Hurricane, and Mega Salamence also hits harder due to its higher ATK stat.
However, there's another factor. Mega Salamence has Fire Fang as a Fast Move, and the combination of Fire Fang and Fly make it quite efficient against Bug and Grass Raid Bosses, both of which are weak to Fire and Flying.
As such, Mega Dragonite is once again overshadowed by Mega Salamence in all parameters.
In a pure Flying type analysis, Mega Staraptor, Shadow Moltres, Shadow Toucannon, Shadow Staraptor, and Mega Pidgeot take the lead. To give a perspective, Mega Dragonite's damage figures are quite similar to that of Mega Pidgeot. In a nutshell, if you want to fulfill Mega Dragonite's role in Pokémon GO, just go with Mega Salamence.
⭐ Perks
Mega Dragonite is certainly strong and its high bulk keeps the Mega Boost afloat for a long while in Raid battles. However, you need to keep in mind that every task Mega Dragonite does, Mega Salamence does it better.
