Overview
An Item Bag Upgrade permanently increases the maximum number of items you can carry in your Item Bag. Every new Trainer starts with a baseline capacity of 350 slots, and each standard upgrade adds 50 permanent slots immediately upon purchase. Extra bag space is especially helpful when PokéStop spins, Gifts, and battle rewards accumulate faster than you use them.
While everyday supplies like Poké Balls, Potions, Berries, and TMs count toward this limit, Gifts, Stickers, and currencies with their own counters—such as Stardust, Mega Energy, and Max Particles—are tracked separately.
How to get it
Purchase an Item Bag Upgrade in the in-game Shop for 200 PokéCoins, or acquire it through limited-time event bundles in the Shop and Pokémon GO Web Store when below the current purchase limit.
Earn up to 750 permanent Item Bag slots through Trainer level-up milestones between Level 10 and Level 80; the Shop always shows the remaining upgrades available to your account.
How to use it
Check whether an orange dot on the Poké Ball menu or a full-storage message refers to your Item Bag or Pokémon Storage, then purchase the matching upgrade in the Shop.
The additional 50 slots apply immediately to your Item Bag only and do not expand Pokémon Storage or separate resource counters.
Worth knowing
Expanding your Item Bag reduces how often you need to clear space before spinning PokéStops, opening Gifts for items, or using the Explorer Gadget and paired accessories. Separate balances like Stardust, Gifts, and Stickers do not consume Item Bag slots.
Maximum purchasable capacities increase periodically ahead of major events like Pokémon GO Tour and Pokémon GO Fest. Check the in-game Shop to see if more upgrades are available rather than relying on older cap totals.
Check which capacity is actually blocking you
Ordinary Item Bag capacity is separate from Pokémon Storage, Egg capacity, Gift and Sticker holding limits, and Postcard Book pages. Buying an Item Bag Upgrade will not make room to catch more Pokémon, hold more Eggs, or raise caps on resources with dedicated counters.
Before spending PokéCoins, check which limit is actually stopping you. When your Item Bag reaches or exceeds its maximum capacity, an orange dot appears on the Poké Ball Main Menu button and below the Item Bag icon. Potions, Revives, Poké Balls, Berries, Raid Passes, and TMs all share the ordinary Item Bag, so the value of another 50 slots depends on how many supplies you want to stockpile between play sessions.
Permanent storage and level-up rewards
Storage expansions purchased in the Shop are permanent and never expire when an event ends. In addition to Shop purchases, the current leveling system awards up to 750 permanent Item Bag slots across specific milestones between Level 10 and Level 80: +25 slots at Levels 10 and 25; +50 slots at Levels 35, 45, 55, and 65; +75 slots at Levels 40, 50, 60, and 70; and +100 slots at Levels 30 and 80.
Because several milestones grant 25 or 75 slots, your total Item Bag capacity can end in 25 or 75 (such as 375 slots at Level 10) even though Shop upgrades always add 50 slots. Level-up storage rewards stack on top of the maximum purchasable Shop cap, which rises periodically ahead of major events; always check the in-game Shop to see if your account can buy additional upgrades.
Price and what 50 slots buys
A standard Item Bag Upgrade costs 200 PokéCoins in the Shop and adds 50 permanent slots as soon as the purchase completes. You do not need to open your inventory or activate a consumable afterward. Buying three standard upgrades costs 600 PokéCoins and adds 150 slots. Item Bag Upgrades also appear in limited-time event bundles in the in-game Shop and the Pokémon GO Web Store, and have occasionally been distributed in free promotional boxes.
To calculate your new capacity and open slots after purchasing upgrades, use the following relationships:
New Capacity = Current Capacity + (50 × Upgrades Purchased), and Available Slots = New Capacity − Current Items Held.
For example, if your Item Bag holds 490 items out of a 500-item limit and no items are used or discarded, buying 1 upgrade raises your limit to 500 + (50 × 1) = 550 slots and leaves 550 − 490 = 60 open slots.
The upgrade only expands the container; it does not add any Poké Balls, Potions, or other supplies.
Before buying an upgrade just to clear a temporary blockage, heal injured Pokémon with excess Potions and Revives, feed extra Berries to Gym defenders for Stardust, or discard surplus items you rarely use. Keep reserves tailored to how you play—there is no single ideal ratio of Poké Balls to medicine for every Trainer.
What happens when your Item Bag is full
When your Item Bag reaches or exceeds its maximum capacity, you cannot spin Photo Discs at PokéStops or Gyms, claim item rewards from GO Battle League sets, or buy item bundles in the Shop. The Explorer Gadget and paired Bluetooth accessories—such as Pokémon GO Plus +—also stop automatically spinning PokéStops while your bag is full.
You are blocked from opening Gifts as well, unless you enable the "Open Gifts when Item Bag is full" option in your settings, which lets you open Gifts solely for Stardust and Friendship progress without receiving ordinary items.
Certain reward sources bypass the capacity check and can push your item count above your maximum limit. You will still receive all items from Trainer level-up milestones, Raid Battle victories, and completed Research tasks even when your bag is already full. In addition, if you do not currently hold a free daily Raid Pass, interacting with a Gym can still award your daily pass despite a full Item Bag.
