Overview

Gimmighoul Coins are the exclusive evolution item used to evolve eligible Roaming Form Gimmighoul into Gholdengo. Evolving one costs 999 Gimmighoul Coins and requires no ordinary Gimmighoul Candy. These coins are completely separate from PokéCoins and cannot be spent in the shop. Gimmighoul Coins appear in your Item Bag with a maximum balance of 9,999, but they occupy zero Item Bag capacity slots.

There is no numeric Trainer-level requirement under the current leveling system; you can start collecting them as soon as you spin a Golden PokéStop or obtain a Gimmighoul.

How to get it

  • Spin PokéStops with active Golden Lure Modules or event-generated Golden PokéStops.

  • Catch Roaming Form Gimmighoul or walk with Gimmighoul or Gholdengo as your Buddy for a chance to earn coins.

How to use it

  1. Open an eligible Gimmighoul when you have 999 coins and select Evolve.

  2. Confirm the individual carefully: the evolution consumes the full coin cost.

Worth knowing

These are not shop currency; PokéCoins cannot be spent directly on the evolution.

Costumed Gimmighoul holding a 9th or 10th anniversary coin cannot evolve. Check for the Evolve button on its summary screen before powering one up.

Eligible forms and early appearances

Only standard Roaming Form Gimmighoul can evolve into Gholdengo. Costumed variants—specifically Gimmighoul holding a 9th anniversary coin (released in July 2025) and Gimmighoul holding a 10th anniversary coin (released in July 2026)—lack an evolution button and cannot evolve, even if they are Shiny or have a Special Background. Always check an individual Gimmighoul's summary screen for the Evolve button before powering it up.

Historically, Gimmighoul Coins and golden PokéStops first appeared as a surprise teaser after the November 2022 Dratini Community Day Classic, ahead of the full Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet connectivity launch on February 27, 2023 (which also featured a one-time free shop box containing 9 Gimmighoul Coins).

Building a coin balance

Golden Lure Modules are shared on the map, meaning you can spin another Trainer’s Golden PokéStop for coins without owning a Nintendo Switch or a copy of Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet. Spinning a PokéStop with an active Golden Lure Module typically awards between 5 and 25 Gimmighoul Coins (in multiples of 5). To earn your own Golden Lure Modules, send a Postcard to Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet on five separate days.

Because you can only hold one Golden Lure Module in your Item Bag at a time, sending a fifth Postcard while you already hold one awards 5 Gimmighoul Coins instead. Sending a Postcard also recharges your Coin Bag once per day, allowing you to start encounters with wild Roaming Form Gimmighoul for 30 minutes.

Catching Roaming Form Gimmighoul and walking with Gimmighoul or Gholdengo as your Buddy each offer a chance to receive Gimmighoul Coins, rather than a guaranteed drop on every catch or Buddy Candy cycle. A catch can yield between 0 and 3 Gimmighoul Coins, and landing Nice, Great, or Excellent throws noticeably increases the chance of earning coins compared to unbonused throws. Using a Pinap Berry increases the Gimmighoul Candy earned from a catch, but it does not multiply Gimmighoul Coins.

Finally, spontaneously generated event Golden PokéStops do not spawn wild Roaming Form Gimmighoul and can use different coin drop tables than stops activated with a Trainer's Golden Lure Module (such as themed drops of 9 or 99+ coins during anniversary events).

Select your chosen eligible Roaming Form Gimmighoul carefully before evolving. Each evolution into Gholdengo consumes 999 Gimmighoul Coins, so evolving two requires 1,998 coins. You do not need an active Golden Lure Module or Coin Bag when pressing the Evolve button. Although the evolution itself requires no Candy, powering up Gimmighoul or Gholdengo—or unlocking a second Charged Attack—still uses standard Gimmighoul Candy and Stardust.
