Overview

The Tart Apple is an evolution item used to evolve Applin into Flapple. Evolving one Flapple requires 20 Tart Apples and 200 Applin Candy. Because each apple variety is tracked as its own separate resource on Applin’s summary page, spare Sweet Apples or Syrupy Apples cannot cover a shortfall of Tart Apples. Your Tart Apple balance does not take up ordinary Item Bag space.

How to get it

  • Tap apples on the map, especially around PokéStops with an active Mossy Lure Module (which can belong to any Trainer), or rarely in the wild without a lure.

  • Selected event research, GO Pass rewards, and event-specific Applin rewards can offer additional apples.

How to use it

  1. Collect the required apple type and Candy, then open Applin’s details.

  2. Select the evolution button for Flapple and confirm the cost.

Worth knowing

Choose the Flapple evolution preview. These apples cannot substitute for Sweet Apples or Syrupy Apples.

Apple resources do not use ordinary Item Bag capacity.

Finding and collecting apples

Tap apples that appear on the map to collect Tart Apples. While you can rarely find apples on the map without a lure, an active Mossy Lure Module at a PokéStop—whether placed by you or another Trainer—significantly boosts apple appearances. Tapping a map apple can award Tart Apples, Sweet Apples, Syrupy Apples, standard items such as Poké Balls or Berries, or start an encounter with a wild Pokémon, including Applin.

Event Field Research, Timed Research, GO Pass reward tracks, and event-specific wild Applin catches that hold apples can also supply additional Tart Apples.

Once you have gathered enough resources, open Applin’s summary screen and choose the evolution button for the form you want. Evolving into Appletun costs 20 Sweet Apples, evolving into Flapple costs 20 Tart Apples, and evolving into Dipplin costs 20 Syrupy Apples, alongside 200 Applin Candy for each branch. Each evolution draws strictly from its own apple counter.

Release

Tart Apples debuted alongside Applin, Flapple, and Appletun during the Sweet Discoveries event starting April 24, 2025, which boosted apple appearances at Mossy Lure Modules and offered apples through Timed Research. Later events expanded apple availability: Harvest Festival 2025 (October 10–16, 2025) added Syrupy Apples to Mossy Lure Module drops, and Harvest Festival: Applin Picking (September 29 – October 5, 2026) debuted Shiny Applin alongside Tart Apple rewards in Field Research, a branching Timed Research path, GO Pass: Harvest Festival ranks, and boosted held-apple rates on caught Applin.

All Timed Research and GO Pass reward claims from these past events have expired and cannot be started today.

Preparing a Flapple evolution

Check the Applin’s appraisal and choose the Flapple evolution button before confirming. Evolving preserves that individual’s IVs; the apples do not reroll them. Appletun and Dipplin are alternative branches, so you need additional Applin to collect those forms.

To evolve two Flapple, budget 40 Tart Apples and 400 Applin Candy at standard costs. If you already have enough Tart Apples but still need Candy, using a Pinap Berry or Silver Pinap Berry when catching Applin increases the Applin Candy earned. That Berry bonus only applies to Candy and does not multiply any Tart Apple held by a caught Applin during an event.

Mossy Lure Modules help you gather Tart Apples, but you do not need to be near an active lure or wait for a specific weather condition when you actually evolve Applin into Flapple. As soon as you have 20 Tart Apples and 200 Applin Candy, you can trigger the evolution anywhere from Applin’s summary screen. Remember that any Timed Research or GO Pass rank awarding Tart Apples must be claimed before its event deadline expires.
