Overview

The Dragon Scale is a Johto evolution item with a single role in Pokémon GO: evolving Seadra into Kingdra. Introduced on February 16, 2017 alongside the main Johto launch, it is required for the final step of the Horsea family tree. Evolving a standard or Shadow Seadra costs one Dragon Scale and 100 Horsea Candy (90 Horsea Candy for a Purified Seadra).

If you start with Horsea, evolving it into Seadra first adds another 25 Horsea Candy (22 for Purified Horsea). While Horsea and Seadra are pure Water-type Pokémon, evolving into Kingdra adds the Dragon typing to create a dual Water- and Dragon-type Pokémon.

How to get it

  • Spin PokéStops and Gyms or open Gifts from friends at Trainer Level 10 or higher for a small chance at a Dragon Scale.

  • Complete a seven-day PokéStop spin streak to receive one random item from the five original Johto evolution items (Sun Stone, King's Rock, Metal Coat, Dragon Scale, or Upgrade).

  • Complete specific Field, Timed, or Special Research tasks—such as Step 6 of A Ripple in Time—that award a Dragon Scale directly.

How to use it

  1. Open Seadra’s summary screen in your Pokémon storage and tap the Evolve button showing the Dragon Scale icon.

  2. Check the target and Candy cost, then confirm. The item and Candy are consumed together.

Worth knowing

Horsea first evolves into Seadra for 25 Horsea Candy. Budget 125 Horsea Candy and one Dragon Scale to take a standard or Shadow Horsea all the way to Kingdra, or 112 Horsea Candy (22 plus 90) and one Dragon Scale for a Purified Horsea.

An evolution item does not change IVs. Check your Seadra's appraisal and expected Kingdra CP before spending the item, and type item into your Pokémon storage search bar to quickly filter for Pokémon you have the items and Candy to evolve.

Compatible evolutions

Candy costs apply to the Horsea family and show the standard, undiscounted amount for regular and Shadow Seadra. Purified Seadra receives a 10% Candy discount (90 Horsea Candy) but still requires one Dragon Scale. Regional forms can have different requirements, though the Horsea family has none.

How to get a Dragon Scale and the seven-day spin streak

Once you reach Trainer Level 10 under the current leveling system, ordinary PokéStop and Gym photo disc spins—as well as opening Gifts from friends—have a small chance of awarding one of the five original Johto evolution items: Sun Stone, King's Rock, Metal Coat, Dragon Scale, or Upgrade. Completing a seven-day consecutive PokéStop spin streak guarantees one random item from those five, though it does not let you choose the Dragon Scale specifically.

It does not drop from standard Raid Boss rewards, Trainer Battles, or seven-day Field Research Breakthroughs. When you want a guaranteed copy, look for event-themed Field or Timed Research, or complete Step 6 of the permanent Special Research story A Ripple in Time.

Choosing a Seadra and using the scale

Pick the Horsea or Seadra you want to keep before spending a scarce Dragon Scale. Evolving Seadra preserves its exact Individual Values (IVs), recalculates its CP and HP using Kingdra's base stats, and rolls a new moveset from Kingdra's move pool. If you are building a Kingdra for a CP-limited PvP format such as Great League or Ultra League, check the expected evolution CP on the confirmation screen before evolving.

Use the Dragon Scale through Seadra’s evolution button on its Pokémon summary screen rather than trying to tap or equip it from your Item Bag. Unlike the core series games, where Seadra evolves when traded while holding a Dragon Scale, Pokémon GO consumes one Dragon Scale and the required Horsea Candy directly through the evolution button. Trading a Seadra in Pokémon GO does not trigger a free trade evolution or remove the Dragon Scale or Candy requirement.

You need one Dragon Scale for every Kingdra you evolve.

Kingdra is Water and Dragon, while Horsea and Seadra are pure Water. The scale does not add Dragon typing to arbitrary Pokémon, teach Dragon-type moves, or help evolve unrelated Dragon families. Its only current evolution use is Seadra into Kingdra.
