Overview
A Pinap Berry is an encounter item that doubles the ordinary Candy you receive when you catch a Pokémon. You can feed one from the berry tray after you start an encounter, making it a staple for building Candy reserves for rare Pokémon families or expensive evolutions. Because evolved Pokémon already award more base catch Candy, doubling their payout is especially rewarding.
However, a Pinap Berry only helps if you complete the catch while its effect is active; if the Pokémon breaks out of the ball, the berry's effect ends and you must feed another one before your next throw.
How to get it
Spin Photo Discs at PokéStops or Gyms, open Gifts from Friends, and complete Field, Timed, or Special Research tasks that reward Pinap Berries.
Collect Trainer level-up rewards from level 17 onward, or open buddy presents brought by a Great Buddy or higher.
How to use it
When you start an encounter, open the berry tray, select the Pinap Berry, and feed it to the Pokémon before throwing a Poké Ball or Premier Ball.
Only one berry effect can be active at a time. A missed or deflected throw does not remove the berry, but a breakout clears it; feed another Pinap Berry after a breakout if you still want double Candy.
Worth knowing
Use Pinap Berries on Pokémon whose Candy you need, especially evolved Pokémon, rare species, and guaranteed catches such as Shiny Legendary Raid Bosses. It does not increase Candy XL.
Spare Pinap Berries can feed your Buddy on the Map or restore motivation to friendly Gym defenders for Stardust and XP, though their double-Candy effect does not apply to these uses.
Catch Candy calculations and comparisons
Under standard conditions, catching a basic (first-stage) Pokémon awards 3 Candy, a first evolution (second-stage) awards 5 Candy, and a second evolution (third-stage) awards 10 Candy. Feeding a Pinap Berry applies a 2× multiplier to that base catch Candy, raising those rewards to 6, 10, and 20 Candy respectively before other bonuses apply.
If you also have an active Mega-Evolved or Primal-Reverted Pokémon that matches the target's type (or if you are catching any Raid Boss), its flat +1 or +2 Candy bonus is added after the Pinap Berry doubles the base amount.
For example, catching a basic 3-Candy Pokémon with a Pinap Berry and a Max-Level Mega Evolution bonus yields (3 × 2) + 2 = 8 Candy.
By comparison, a Silver Pinap Berry applies a 2.333× catch Candy multiplier alongside a 1.8× catch rate modifier. On a standard catch, a Silver Pinap Berry yields 7 Candy for a basic Pokémon (up from 6 with a regular Pinap Berry), 11 Candy for a first evolution (up from 10), and 23 Candy for a second evolution (up from 20). Neither the regular Pinap Berry nor the Silver Pinap Berry increases Candy XL drops.
The berry must still be active when the catch succeeds
Feeding a Pinap Berry removes the item from your Item Bag right away, so you do not get it back if you flee the encounter or fail to catch the Pokémon. Despite in-game descriptions mentioning your next catch attempt, a throw that misses completely or is deflected by a Pokémon's attack does not clear the active berry. The effect only ends when the Pokémon is caught or breaks out of a Poké Ball or Premier Ball.
Check for the Pinap Berry icon next to the Pokémon's name and feed another berry after any breakout if you still want the 2× Candy bonus.
A Pinap Berry only doubles the Candy awarded for the catch itself. Under standard rates, catching a basic 3-Candy Pokémon with an active Pinap Berry gives 6 Candy, and transferring that Pokémon to Professor Willow afterward gives 1 additional Candy for a total of 7. The transfer reward is a separate transaction and is never doubled by the berry.
Unlike Razz, Golden Razz, or Silver Pinap Berries, a regular Pinap Berry leaves the berry modifier in the catch formula at 1.0×, so it does not increase your chance of catching the Pokémon. If a rare wild target keeps breaking out or you are down to your last few Premier Balls after a Raid, switching to a Golden Razz Berry or Silver Pinap Berry after a breakout is usually the safer play.
One major exception is a Shiny Legendary Raid Boss (or other guaranteed-catch shiny Raid encounter), which has a 100% catch rate on the first ball that hits it; always feed a Pinap Berry or Silver Pinap Berry on these encounters since the Pokémon cannot break out once hit.
Unlock level and level-up rewards
Under the current leveling system (Levels 1–80, introduced in October 2025), Pinap Berries unlock at Trainer Level 17. Reaching level 17 awards your first 5 Pinap Berries and adds the berry to the standard item pool from PokéStops, Gyms, and Gifts.
Across all 25 Pinap Berry reward milestones from level 17 to level 80, you receive a total of 465 guaranteed Pinap Berries from leveling up, scaling from 5 berries at early milestones (such as levels 17, 23, and 26) up to 70 berries at level 80. Older guides written for the previous leveling system often list level 18, which was the launch-era unlock threshold before the October 2025 rebalance.
Field, Timed, and Special Research tasks follow their own reward tables and can grant Pinap Berries independently.
Candy bonuses and release
Pinap Berries launched alongside Nanab Berries on February 16, 2017, as part of the major Johto-region Pokémon update. In the berry tray, the item resembles a yellow pineapple with green leaves. During events that boost catch Candy, the Pinap Berry's 2× multiplier stacks multiplicatively with the event multiplier.
For example, catching a basic 3-Candy Pokémon with a Pinap Berry during a 2× Catch Candy Spotlight Hour or Community Day awards 3 × 2 × 2 = 12 Candy (and adding a Max-Level Mega Evolution bonus brings the total to 14 Candy).
Getting more value from each berry
Use Pinaps on accessible catches from a family you are building, especially evolved Pokémon and species with expensive evolutions. A calm research encounter can be a good place to spend them because you can take time over the throw. For an elusive wild Pokémon, pair the berry with a stronger ball rather than assuming the Candy bonus makes the catch easier.
When your Item Bag is full, you can also feed Pinap Berries to your Buddy or to friendly Gym defenders. In Gyms, a Pinap Berry restores the same amount of motivation as a regular Razz Berry (12% on the first berry when fed in person, decaying with subsequent berries and reduced when feeding remotely) and awards Stardust and XP.
However, feeding a Pinap Berry outside of an encounter never doubles the Candy your Buddy finds while walking or the occasional bonus Candy earned from feeding Gym defenders. If you are short on catch Candy, hold onto your Pinap Berries for encounters and use spare Razz or Nanab Berries for routine Buddy and Gym feeding.
