Mega Malamar PvE Analysis

Recommended moves

⚔️ Raids

Mega Malamar is one of the relatively newer Mega Pokémon to be introduced in the franchise and with some impressive marketing to hype it up. Mega Malamar and the Inkay line as a whole is also noteworthy as it has the very rare type combination of Dark and Psychic.

  • Peck, Psywave and Psycho Cut: Mega Malamar’s Fast Attacks. Peck just exists to be ignored. Psywave and Psycho Cut are strong Fast Attacks, both having the same damage and energy generation stats.
  • Foul Play, Psybeam, Superpower, Hyper Beam and Psywave+: Mega Malamar’s Charged Attacks. For PvE Psybeam+ is the only one with value.

Mega Malamar does not have a high attack stat. This becomes painfully apparent when comparing Mega Malamar to other Psychic-type raid attackers. Even with Psybeam+ Mega Malamar does not stack up against other Mega Pokémon such as Mega Alakazam or Mega Gardevoir. As a dark raid attacker it is not even within the Top-100. I think that says it all.

Mega Malamar's prospects as a raid attacker might seem dreary, but there is a scenario where it can actually be useful. And that is, as a support Pokémon in Psychic-type raids. Mega Malamar's unique Dark/Psychic typing makes it triple resistant to Psychic-type attacks. That, mixed with its decent bulk, means Mega Malamar can stand its ground against Psychic-type raid Pokémon for a really long time as it provides a Mega Boost to every other Dark-type Pokémon to buff up their attacks. It is excellent for Mega Mewtwo Y Super Mega Raids, where it can break shields and at the same time provide XL candy boost for Mewtwo encounters.

Recommended moves

🔵 Mega Great League

While most Mega Evolutions struggle in the capped CP environment, Mega Malamar is an exception. It performs solidly in the Mega Great League, even outperforming regular and shadow Malamar. It has a great win-loss record across all shield scenarios, making full use of its super max level and the new Mega Charged Attack, Psybeam+. Trainers should definitely look for optimal PvP IV, Mega Great League eligible Mega Malamar and invest in it.

🟡 Mega Ultra League

Mega Malamar performance dips slightly in Mega Ultra League, but it is still a strong pick. It continues to perform better than regular and shadow Malamar, and that too without any XL investment. Mega Malamar is a solid and budget friendly option for Mega Ultra League, one that Trainers should feel reasonably confident to invest in.

🟣 Mega Master League

With a Max CP of just 3554, Mega Malamar struggles in a league filled with 5000 and above CP options.
