Say hello to the best non-Legendary Water type in Pokémon GO: Mega Greninja! 🌀
With an exceptionally high DPS, Mega Greninja is one of the most valuable Mega Evolutions in the game and being a starter, it's also very economical given the cheap costs for powering up and farming Candy. How does the Mega Evolution of one of the most iconic Pokémon from the franchise exactly fare in both its typings and against its competition? Is there something that would eventually overtake it?
🌊 As a Water type
Mega Greninja’s Water-type DPS with Water Shuriken and Hydro Cannon is only around 2.8% behind Primal Kyogre. But keeping the Primal monstrosity aside, Mega Greninja exceeds the damage figures of every other Hydro Cannon user (be it Megas or Shadows) and even Shadow Kyogre. That's not all as access to Water Shuriken (EPS of 14.00) also helps it reach Hydro Cannon faster than all its peers who resort to Water Gun or Waterfall. This makes Mega Greninja more energy efficient than others, and it compensates for its low bulk. However, do keep in mind that dodging with Water Shuriken is a little less efficient than Water Gun since it has double the cooldown (1.00s vs 0.50s).
It is quite easy to max out a Mega Greninja in comparison to any of the Kyogre variants, so if you have a high IV Greninja, don't hesitate investing Stardust and Candies into the Ninja Frog!
🌑 As a Dark type
While Mega Greninja absolutely dominates as a Water-type attacker, its performance in the Dark department is quite disappointing. Sporting the underwhelming Night Slash as its Dark-type Charger Attack, Mega Greninja's damage numbers are down the pecking order, around the level of Incineroar and Kingambit. Technically, this is good enough for Tier 1 Raids Bosses, but for tougher battles, other Dark Pokémon are far better. Not to mention, it's also competing with Ghost types in Raids (Ghost and Psychic Bosses), so in those situations, there are a slew of better options (both damage and bulk) than Mega Greninja. It's best to use it solely as a Water-type attacker in Pokémon GO.
🔍 Is Mega Greninja future proof in Pokémon GO?
This analysis only arises in the Water type mega obviously. During its debut, Primal Kyogre already surpassed it but Mega Greninja has the advantage of being cheaper to max out. So, the real competition would come if Pokémon GO decides to bring Ash Greninja to the game.
Ash Greninja is far stronger than Mega Greninja (339 ATK vs 299 ATK), and with the same Water Shuriken + Hydro Cannon moveset, it deals almost 14% more damage. Not only is Ash Greninja a bigger cult figure, but it will also overtake Primal Kyogre to become the undisputed best Water type in the meta. Of course, this is assuming that Ash Greninja is actually made available in Pokémon GO, which may be far-fetched given it was banned from VGC and any form of official play as well. Fingers crossed for this one, but either way, it is definitely worth having a maxed-out Mega Greninja in your squad.
