⚔️ Raids
Despite the shadow boost, Shadow Lapras is built for the PvP scene, and lags behind other water type attackers.
🛡️ Gyms
Shiny shadow flex! Lapras is an A-Tier gym defender thanks to its excellent bulk and great moveset, but the shadow boost doesn’t help it overall in gym defence.

Preferred Moveset - Psywave, Sparkling Aria and Ice Beam* / Skull Bash
Lapras was the recent lucky dip winner of multiple movepool updates that drastically improved its standing in PvP. With one of the best fast moves in the game, combined with access to excellent charged moves, amazing bulk and excellent typing, Lapras is back with a vengeance! For many older players they will already have spent Elite TMs to get the previously optimal moveset - but now, that is no longer necessary.
🧸 Little League
Shadow Lapras loses out on performance compared to the non-shadow variant. Bulk matters in the sub 500CP meta, and you’re better off with the non-shadow form in this case.
🔵 Great League
Lapras’ bulk is what helps it stand out in the Great League, so the shadow variant is overall what you would consider a sidegrade to the non-shadow version. It can pick up some helpful wins that the non-shadow cannot achieve, but its comparative lesser bulk means it starts to lose unexpected matchups that you would hope to win. The shadow’s role is probably more suited to the closer role, particularly with a shield advantage. Overall though - if you have a good ‘PvP IV’ shadow version (ie: low attack, high defense and HP) then it is absolutely worth your while to build one!
🟡 Ultra League
As in the Great League, the shadow variant is more of a sidegrade to the non-shadow version. It does pick up some additional wins in the 2 shield scenario, but sees some additional losses in the 0 and 1 shield scenarios. This is slightly problematic, as you are typically wanting to use your bulky Nessy as a damage absorber, rather than investing all shields on it. It’s definitely not a bad investment, but its performance compared to the non-shadow may not be worth the cost.
🟣 Master League
Nessy can’t compete in the highest CP meta, no matter how good its moveset!
