Night Slash
One of the most popular Pokémon from the franchise finally gets the Shadow treatment and it sure does make a splash!
Until Shadow Inteleon and Shadow Primarina hit the shores of Pokémon GO, Shadow Greninja will be the best Shadow Water starter in the game, with DPS higher than regular Kyogre (with Origin Pulse).
⚔️ Raids
Right off the bat, it is important to note that Shadow Greninja is extremely fragile, and expert dodging is necessary to help it survive even half a minute in a Raid battle.
While a DPS output higher than Origin Pulse Kyogre is impressive, Greninja has a strong Mega Evolution on the horizon and an even stronger exclusive form, Ash Greninja, if and when it debuts in Pokémon GO.
With Mega Greninja guaranteed, you should know that this Pokémon even surpasses Shadow Kyogre in damage output.
As such, with other Starter Shadows and its own Mega Evolution overtaking it in performance, you may have to think twice before maxing out Shadow Greninja.
As a Dark type, its performance is so bad that trainers often forget about Greninja’s secondary typing during battle. Just focus on using Shadow Greninja as a Water-type attacker.
🛡️ Gyms
Not only is Shadow Greninja tragically frail, it is also weak to the common Fighting-type Gym attackers.

🔵 Great League
Shadow Greninja is formidable in the Great League. Despite being frail, its exceptionally high energy gains from Water Shuriken gives it access to the fastest Hydro Cannon in the meta. The Shadow boost helps make these moves more powerful, and on the off chance Night Slash gives Shadow Greninja an ATK boost, it can sweep an entire team.
Feraligatr, Jellicent, Florges, Shadow Scizor, and both regular and Shadow Sableye are usual victims of this Pokémon. It also beats several Pokémon regular Greninja can't beat, including Cradily, Florges, Alolan Ninetales, and Malamar.
🟡 Ultra League
The dominant run of Shadow Greninja continues in the Ultra League, beating core threats like Cresselia, Shadow Empoleon, Shadow Feraligatr, Shadow Drapion, Shadow Scizor, Forretress, Tentacruel, and Bellibolt. Many of these are wins that regular Greninja can't achieve, although the latter beats Galarian Moltres, Steelix, and Trevenant. As such, the two versions of Greninja are mostly sidegrades of each other. Overall, regular Greninja is definitely more threatening, both in zero and full shields.
🟣 Master League
Shadow Greninja just adds spice to the Master League, and its wins are expected (against Ground and Psychic types). You're still better off sticking to Kyogre, Primarina, or even Gyarados for more reliable Water Pokémon performance.
