Overview

Rare Candy XL is a flexible resource that converts one-to-one into Candy XL for a chosen Pokémon family. Trainers use Candy XL to power up Pokémon from level 40 to 50 and to upgrade a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon's Max Moves to their final level. Converting Rare Candy XL directly supplies family-specific Candy XL without the expensive 100-to-1 ordinary Candy exchange.

Because Rare Candy XL is much scarcer than standard Rare Candy, it is best saved for an immediate power-up or Max Move upgrade rather than converted early for a speculative future build.

How to get it

  • Earn it from eligible raids, Max Battles, GO Battle League rewards, research, level-up rewards, Routes, or GO Pass tracks.

  • Guaranteed quantities, eligibility, and bonuses depend on the activity or event.

How to use it

  1. Select the item, choose a Pokémon, enter how many to convert, and confirm.

  2. Conversion is one-to-one and cannot be reversed into the generic item.

Worth knowing

Reserve it for a Pokémon you actually plan to power above level 40; level 50 builds can require hundreds of Candy XL.

Candy is shared across the evolution family, so converting on one family member also supports the others.

Budget beyond level 40

Powering up an ordinary Pokémon from level 40 to 50 costs a total of 296 Candy XL, while a Purified Pokémon requires 272 Candy XL and a Shadow Pokémon requires 360 Candy XL. Upgrading a Dynamax or Gigantamax Pokémon's Max Move to Level 3 also requires family Candy XL alongside Max Particles. Rare Candy XL can cover a shortfall in any of these family-specific Candy XL requirements, though you must still pay the accompanying Stardust or Max Particles.

Compare that with ordinary Candy conversion: 20 Rare Candy XL become 20 family Candy XL directly, while creating the same amount through the 100-to-1 exchange would take 2,000 ordinary Candy. Check the individual Pokémon's remaining power-up cost before converting so you do not commit more Rare Candy XL than the build needs.

Level-up and event sources

Under the current leveling system, Trainers earn one Rare Candy XL at each level from 71 to 79 except 75 (eight in total). Once you reach Trainer level 31 and unlock Candy XL access, you can also obtain Rare Candy XL earlier through Special and Timed Research, GO Pass reward tracks, GO Battle League rewards, Routes, Max Battles, and eligible raids.

Some Raid Hour events have guaranteed a Rare Candy XL for a qualifying catch; that guarantee belongs to the specific event bonus rather than every five-star raid.

The June 2026 Daily Discoveries update introduced one Rare Candy XL for completing in-person Max Battles on Max Monday and for completing qualifying in-person Raid Hour battles. This is a scheduled bonus, not a guarantee from every raid catch. Check the active week’s bonus announcement, especially during events that suspend or replace Daily Discoveries.

Use it for a specific XL shortfall

If your next selected power-ups require 40 Candy XL and you already have 33 for that family, seven Rare Candy XL fill the gap. You still need enough Stardust and a Trainer level that permits the intended power-ups.

Each Rare Candy XL becomes family Candy XL, not ordinary Candy. It cannot pay an evolution's ordinary Candy cost or be changed back into an unconverted Rare Candy XL afterward. Regional forms and evolution stages that share a Candy family also share the converted Candy XL balance.

Unconverted Rare Candy XL takes up space in your Item Bag, whereas converted family Candy XL does not. Even so, it is worth holding Rare Candy XL in your Item Bag until you have chosen the exact Pokémon and checked its remaining costs—especially if you are still deciding between an ordinary 296 Candy XL build and a 360 Candy XL Shadow build.
