Recommended moves

Forretress shares its Bug/Steel typing with Scizor, Genesect, and Escavalier. The first two Pokémon’s stats are inclined towards offense, while Forretress is a defensive unit. As such, you shouldn’t be opting for Forretress in Raid battles.

A high DEF stat, several resistances, and just one weakness make Forretress a generally good Gym defender. However, it’s double-weak to Fire, making it an easy target for those fiery attackers.

🔵 Great League

Forretress with its high bulk and numerous resistances is one of the strongest Pokémon in the Great League. It completely walls Poison, Fairy, Steel, and Ice types, and has an impressive showing against many Water Pokémon such as Azumarill, Feraligatr, Politoed, and Empoleon. It is also a definitive answer to Cresselia and pulls off a victorious performance against Aegislash, Shadow Sableye, and Shadow Drapion.

It excels as a lead, shrugging off offense and even baiting shields quite successfully. Galarian Moltres, Jellicent, Medicham, Charjabug, and Corviknight… Forretress makes all these bigshots struggle as a less. However, due to low ATK and lack of a nuke Charged Move, it is less impressive as a closer, so try to use it in the first half of the battle.

🟡 Ultra League

A max CP of 2580 results in a powerful Level 48.5, exactly 2500 CP Pokémon in this format. Needless to say, Forretress is dominant in its Ultra League run, beating even Giratina Altered, Regidrago, Shadow Mewtwo, along with a slew of Fairy, Ice, and Steel types. In fact, it also gives Cobalion a run for its money. Here, it is more or less equally good in the (2-2) and (1-1) shield scenarios, and is, again, relatively underwhelming as a closer. In a nutshell, getting through Forretress is often a pain for even the most seasoned players unless they're carrying a Fire type.
