Zacian in the meta
PvE Analysis
Zacian (Hero of Many Battles) may lack a Fairy-type Fast Attack (it doesn't even learn any in the Main Series Games), but its high ATK and access to Play Rough actually make it a viable attacker in Raids.
⚔️ Raids
- With Snarl and Play Rough, Zacian (Hero of Many Battles) hits harder than Xerneas and Gardevoir, making this Legendary usable at least in lower-tier Raid battles. It works pretty well against Bosses like Mega Latios and Giratina (Origin Forme).
- Snarl’s higher damage numbers and a higher damage window make it the better option over Quick Attack, even though they share the same energy generation.
- Combining with Wild Charge actually makes Zacian (Hero of Many Battles) a decent counter to Water- and Flying-type Raid Bosses, especially if they have a Dragon-, Dark-, or Fighting-type coverage move. A great example of this is Mega Gyarados.
- Close Combat is just an underwhelming Charged Attack, with even Fighting-type Pokémon not preferring it in battle. This move has no use in PvE for Zacian (Hero of Many Battles).
- You might think of using Metal Claw and Iron Head to masquerade Zacian (Hero of Many Battles) as a Steel-type attacker, but this is a poor decision since most Steel-type Pokémon resist some or all of the Pokémon types they counter (Fairy, Ice, and Rock). Zacian (Hero of Many Battles) doesn't resist any of them.
On that note, you should ideally transform it to Zacian (Crowned Sword) to turn it into a legitimately amazing Steel-type attacker and also a powerful Fairy-type attacker with Metal Claw and Play Rough.
PvP Analysis
🔵 Great League
Not applicable
🟡 Ultra League
Zacian's overall performance is poor. Although it can draw out shields from its opponents with access to the hard-hitting attacks Wild Charge and Close Combat, in all even shield scenarios, it has a poor win-loss record. Its bulk is also far worse than Fairy contemporaries such as Clefable and Galarian Weezing, which are much safer investments in the Ultra League.
🟣 Master League
Zacian (Hero) is a neat addition to the Master League meta, with its resistance to Dragon, Dark, and Fighting, and its wide array of attacks making it a tricky Pokémon to face. One never really knows what set of attacks Zacian is running, and all its Charged Attacks are heavy hitters with or without STAB, prompting opponents to shield almost always.
Most of its wins come against Dark types, Dragons (not Reshiram and White Kyurem), Fairies (not Zacian Crowned Sword and Xerneas), and Lugia. So while its wins are expected, the surprise factor packed in its attack set often throws players’ strategies out of the window.
Experienced GBL players will tell you that they have lost at least a few matches after wrongly gauging Zacian (Hero)'s attack set, and that is telling of how impactful this Pokémon is in these battles.
