PvE Analysis
Recommended moves
- Dark Attacker:
Bite
Brutal Swing * - Dragon Attacker:
Dragon Breath
Dragon Pulse
Brutal Swing Hydreigon has always been a top-notch Dark-type attacker, combining high DPS, decent TDO, and resistance to both Psychic and Ghost types, the Pokémon types that Hydreigon counters.
Now, Shadow Hydreigon takes the power level to many notches higher, establishing itself as a scary Dark-type attacker with insane DPS and impressive TDO as well. Note that you'll need to use an Elite Charged TM to teach Brutal Swing to Shadow Hydreigon, and it's worth spending! 🙌
⚔️ Raids
Even though both Ghost and Dark type attackers compete with each other for countering Psychic-type Raid Bosses, Shadow Hydreigon gains the edge due to many reasons. For starters, its Dark/Dragon typing helps it heavily resist Psychic-type damage. Additionally, it also resists Ghost-type damage, letting it overtake Ghost Pokémon that take super-effective damage.
Additionally, despite the Shadow nerf to its DEF, Shadow Hydreigon still possesses high TDO. In terms of pure damage, Shadow Hydreigon hits harder than the likes of Dark Pulse Shadow Darkrai (though the Shadow Ball variant does better), and even Shadow and Mega Tyranitar.
If you catch one with 15 ATK, Shadow Hydreigon is a worthwhile investment as a Dark-type attacker.
🛡️ Gyms
Shadow Hydreigon is less bulkier than regular Hydreigon and also carries the glaring double weakness to Fairy-type moves, along with a bunch of other weaknesses like Bug, Fighting, Dragon, and Ice.
💎 The best PvE moves for Shadow Hydreigon are Bite and Brutal Swing.

🔵 Great League
Shadow Hydreigon is a strong contender for the Great League and a small improvement over Hydreigon, a Pokémon that benefitted from the move upgrades of the Tales of Transformation Season (Dragon Breath and Dragon Pulse).
Shadow Hydreigon bags some impressive wins, including Corviknight, Cradily, Lapras, Golisopod, Shadow Marowak, and Mandibuzz, all thanks to a harder hitting Dragon Breath, and quicker access to Brutal Swing and a facelifted Dragon Pulse.
That said, the lower bulk costs it, losing to Shadow Dragonite, Shadow Dragonair, Shadow Drapion, and Morpeko.
To put it into perspective, Shadow Hydreigon is as good as Guzzlord in the Great League! 👏
🟡 Ultra League
Post the Tales of Transformation Season moveset upgrade, Dragon Breath’s faster energy gains, the shield-baiting Brutal Swing and the better-than-ever Dragon Pulse made Hydreigon usable in the Ultra League. Shadow Hydreigon is more powerful, beating a large section of the format.
It beats all meta Waters except Blastoise, Gastrodon, Empoleon and Kingdra, all Dragons and Fire types. It struggles against Fairies (obviously), Fighters, Bugs, and Steel, but these are all expected. Overall, an extremely viable pick! ✌️
🟣 Master League
Shadow Hydreigon gets a huge glow-up over regular Hydreigon, raking in a large number of wins. Psychic types like Mewtwo, Solgaleo, Lugia, Metagross, the Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings fusions of Necrozma are expected, but it also defeats Dialga Origin, Melmetal, Eternatus, Palkia Origin, Zygarde Complete, Black and White Kyurem, Ho-Oh, Reshiram, Zekrom, Groudon, Kyogre, and Landorus Therian.
Shadow Hydreigon is undoubtedly Hydreigon’s best display in the Master League, and one that's completely worth maxing out. 💯
💎 The best PvP moves for Shadow Hydreigon are Dragon Breath, Brutal Swing and Dragon Pulse.
