PvE Analysis
Recommended moves
- Ghost Attacker:
Hex
Shadow Ball
The Ghost/Steel-type Gholdengo is also Pokémon #1000. It has a high ATK and a good Ghost-type moveset which makes it viable but largely outclassed. It learns no Steel-type moves, leaving it completely absent in the Steel department. Overall, Gholdengo is more of a collectible. 🪙
⚔️ Raids
252 ATK and access to Hex and Shadow Ball does put Gholdengo in the Ghost-type meta but it's outclassed by regular Pokémon such as Gengar, Chandelure, Dragapult, and Hoopa (Confined). It's not spectacular but still usable. 👍
🛡️ Gyms
Aside from being a great Gym flex due to its rarity, Gholdengo also boasts a chock full of resistances, including Normal, Poison, Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Fighting, Flying, Grass, Ice, Psychic, Rock, and Steel. As such, it is a nice Gym defender though not a particularly powerful one.
🧬 Evolution
You need to collect 999 Gimmighoul Coins to evolve Gimmighoul to Gholdengo. There is no Candy requirement.
You can get a Gimmighoul Coin by spinning a Gold PokéStop, which is activated by a Golden Lure Module, an item obtained by sending postcards from Pokémon GO to Pokémon Scarlet or Violet. This Lure also results in Gimmighoul spawns.
Additionally, catching a Gimmighoul can also get you its Coins.
💎 The best PvE moves for Gholdengo are Hex and Shadow Ball.

🔵 Great League
The Attack-heavy Gholdengo loses out on bulk in the Great League where it gives a decent performance, winning against Azumarill, Blastoise, regular and Shadow Annihilape, Cradily, Wigglytuff, and Samurott. While it doesn’t do anything special, it can absorb damage due to its 12 resistances. Notably, Bastiodon struggles against this golden surfer.
🟡 Ultra League
Gholdengo improves in the Ultra League, bagging key wins wish we Giratina (Altered), Cresselia, Shadow Dragonite, Clefable, Virizion, Cobalion, Registeel, and Zygarde Complete. Once again, its resistances benefit it in battle but in an offensive role, it's not able to differentiate itself from other Ghost-type attackers in this format. It's certainly a fun pick but not a meta-shaking one by any means. 🙂
🟣 Master League
With no restrictions on its stats, Gholdengo impresses in the Master League, slaying bigshots such as Dialga and Dialga Origin, Palkia and Palkia Origin, Zacian Hero, Zacian Crowned, Zamazenta Crowned, Primarina, Dragonite, and Melmetal. This makes Gholdengo a core breaker, making it a great fit alongside Dragons and Fairies. It also puts pressure on most of the meta with the largely unresisted Hex. 😈
But Giratina Origin is ultimately the better Ghost type in this format so best to use Gholdengo in Master League Premier.
💎 The best PvP moves for Gholdengo are Hex, Shadow Ball and Focus Blast.
