Earthquake
With an extremely hard-hitting moveset, Shadow Torterra is a solid Grass-type attacker in ⚔️ Raids. It trails behind Mega Venusaur, but overtakes Mega Victreebel, Rillaboom, and Meowscarada. While the Shadows of these Grass starters will obviously surpass Shadow Torterra, the resistance to Rock makes it very formidable against Rock-type Raid Bosses.
As a Ground type, it is less impressive but still quite viable. Its damage output exceeds that of Shadow Swampert and is a little behind Shadow Hippowdon. However, you can get higher Ground-type DPS than all these mentioned Shadows simply by using regular Mamoswine.
For 🛡️ Gyms, it is risky putting Shadow Torterra as its lowered DEF makes it an easy target for Ice-type attackers.

🔵 Great League
Torterra is renowned in the Great League for being a surprise package. With a strong moveset, great coverage against all its weaknesses with Stone Edge, or guaranteed opponent’s DEF debuffs with Sand Tomb, the Gen 4 Grass/Ground starter makes quick work of Medicham, Sableye, Florges, Shadow Drapion, Wigglytuff, Tinkaton, and a host of Water, Ground, Poison, and Rock types.
However, the Shadow is a downgrade. With Stone Edge, Shadow Torterra loses core wins like Cradily, Jellicent, Shadow Quagsire, Sableye, Shadow Swampert, and Tinkaton. However, the heightened Fast Move damage is enough to take down Azumarill, Galarian Corsola, and even Shadow Empoleon.
The Sand Tomb variant is not really a downgrade, and is, in fact, a sidegrade. Shadow Torterra claims Clefable, and once again, Galarian Corsola and Shadow Empoleon.
🟡 Ultra League
It's the same story again in the Ultra League, with the regular version getting the edge in wins.
With Stone Edge, Shadow Torterra loses battles it otherwise wins in its regular form, including Annihilape, Blastoise, Shadow Dusknoir, Greninja, Lickilicky, Galarian Weezing, Shadow Empoleon, and Zygarde Complete. While it still beats some Fairies like Clefable and Florges, and also Cradily and Lapras, the regular version is the way to go.
When you take Sand Tomb into the picture, there's less of a gap than Stone Edge, but the Shadow still underperforms in comparison, losing to Annihilape, Blastoise, Shadow Empoleon, Shadow Scizor, Lickilicky, and Zygarde Complete.
Once again, it wins against Cradily, Clefable, Florges, and Lapras, but overall, the Shadow is clearly inferior to regular Torterra.
Either way, you're better off using other Grass starters like Venusaur, Decidueye, and Meowscarada than any of the Torterra variants, but if you're bent on going with the Gen 4 monster, the regular variant is the clear winner.
🟣 Master League
Shadow or not, Torterra falls hard to the might of the Master League.
