Overview

A Purified Gem is a combat item that helps a raid group subdue an enraged boss during three-star and five-star Shadow Raids. Whenever you collect four Shadow Shards from Team GO Rocket battles or Shadow Raids, Professor Willow's Shard Refiner automatically combines them into one Purified Gem. Despite the name, this item does not purify a captured Shadow Pokémon in your storage, nor does it replace the Stardust and Candy required on a Pokémon's summary screen.

Because subduing a boss requires eight Purified Gems across the group and a single Trainer can use at most five per battle, at least two Trainers must coordinate their supplies to remove the enraged state early.

How to get it

  • Collect four Shadow Shards from defeating Team GO Rocket members (1 from a Grunt, 3 from a Leader, or 4 from Giovanni) or completing Shadow Raids; Professor Willow's Shard Refiner automatically combines four shards into one Purified Gem.

  • The normal inventory limit is 10 Purified Gems, after which ordinary Shadow Shard drops stop (though receiving a multi-shard reward while at 9 Gems can briefly push your total to 11).

How to use it

  1. Tap the Purified Gem button in the bottom-left corner of the screen when a three-star or five-star Shadow Raid Boss becomes enraged.

  2. Coordinate with your raid group: one Trainer can use at most five Purified Gems per battle, with a 5-second cooldown between each use.

Worth knowing

Subduing an enraged boss requires eight Purified Gems across the raid group, and using one to seven Gems provides no partial stat reduction or refund if the raid fails. One Trainer's five-Gem allowance can never meet the threshold alone.

Purifying a captured Shadow Pokémon instead uses Stardust and Candy from its details screen.

Subduing a boss is a group resource problem

Subduing an enraged Shadow Raid Boss requires eight Purified Gems from the group, while a single Trainer can spend no more than five in one battle. Furthermore, individual Gems (one through seven) produce no measurable reduction in the boss's boosted Attack and Defense stats; the boss only returns to normal stats when the eighth Gem takes effect.

A solo player carrying 10 Purified Gems cannot subdue an enraged boss with items, and any Gems spent are consumed immediately without a refund if the group falls short of eight or fails the raid.

Eight Gems represent 32 Shadow Shards. For a two-person group, plan a split such as four Gems each rather than assuming that a few scattered uses are enough. This is resource planning, not a guarantee the team can defeat the boss. Event rules can change raid behavior, so check the current battle conditions.

This subduing mechanic applies only to three-star and five-star Shadow Raid Bosses (one-star Shadow Raid Bosses do not enrage). A Purified Gem does not counter a Max Battle boss when it gets desperate, and it cannot purify a Shadow Pokémon in your storage.

Enrage and group coordination

Three-star and five-star Shadow Raid Bosses become enraged after losing roughly a third of their health (at 60% HP remaining). While enraged, the boss receives massive stat boosts—roughly 1.81× to its Attack and 3× to its Defense (after adding 15 to each base stat)—making it hit much harder and take far less damage. The boss stays enraged until the group applies eight Purified Gems, or until its health drops to 15% HP remaining, where the enraged state ends naturally.

When the boss enrages and you have at least one Purified Gem in your Item Bag, a Purified Gem button appears in the bottom-left corner of the battle screen. Each Trainer has a 5-second cooldown between Gem uses, so start applying them as soon as the boss enrages rather than waiting until the end of the raid. Special event rules can occasionally alter how a boss enrages or how many shards drop, so pay attention to active event bonuses.

Prepare supplies before the boss enrages

Eight Gems in the group are useful only if the available Trainers can actually use them within their individual limits. A split of five and three works; one Trainer with eight and a partner with none cannot supply eight in that battle. Four each gives a two-person group an even plan.

Tap the Gem control when it becomes available and allow its cooldown to finish before the next use. Do not assume that repeated taps have spent several Gems; watch the item count and the boss’s subdued state.

Subduing removes the enraged stat boosts, but the group still needs enough damage output to defeat the boss before the raid timer expires. Purified Gems and Shadow Shards both take up standard Item Bag space and can be discarded if you do not plan to raid. Purified Gems do not replace a Raid Pass, work like a Revive on fainted Pokémon, improve the caught Pokémon's IVs, or increase your chance of catching the boss.
