Overview
A Meteorite is a special move-teaching item used exclusively on Rayquaza to teach the Flying-type Charged Attack Dragon Ascent. Unlike other Mega-Evolving Pokémon that only require Mega Energy, Rayquaza must know Dragon Ascent before it can Mega Evolve. Meteorites do not appear in your main Item Bag or take up bag storage; instead, you can check how many you hold and use one directly on a Rayquaza's summary screen in your Pokémon storage.
Learning the attack and paying the Mega Energy cost are separate requirements, so save each Meteorite for a Rayquaza you plan to build.
How to get it
Complete Rayquaza event Special Research or Timed Research that explicitly rewards a Meteorite.
Catching Rayquaza from eligible raids can also yield one as a rare reward. Availability depends on Rayquaza’s event schedule.
How to use it
Open the summary page of the Rayquaza you want to teach in your Pokémon storage and use a Meteorite from its screen to learn Dragon Ascent. Meteorites do not appear in your main Item Bag.
You still need Rayquaza Mega Energy: the first Mega Evolution costs 400. The Meteorite teaches Dragon Ascent but does not pay that energy cost.
Worth knowing
A Charged TM or Elite Charged TM cannot teach Dragon Ascent or substitute for a Meteorite.
Teaching Dragon Ascent replaces one of Rayquaza's Charged Attacks. Check its existing moves and consider unlocking a second Charged Attack slot before confirming.
The move and the Mega Evolution are separate investments
Dragon Ascent makes the chosen Rayquaza eligible for Mega Evolution; it does not permanently keep Rayquaza in Mega form. The Mega form lasts eight hours, with a separate energy and rest-period system.
The requirement is tied to that individual Rayquaza. Teaching one Rayquaza does not teach the rest of your collection. Choose the individual and the Charged Attack to replace before spending the Meteorite, then budget its Mega Energy separately.
Release and event rewards
Meteorites debuted alongside Mega Rayquaza at Pokémon GO Fest 2023 in August 2023, with a free Special Research reward and an additional opportunity through ticketed Special Research. Mega Rayquaza returned in Elite Raids on June 29, 2024, and a special raid makeup event on August 3, 2024, each offering free Timed Research for a Meteorite. Its October 18, 2025 Raid Day offered both free Timed Research and an optional US$4.99 ticketed Timed Research for a second Meteorite.
During the Ozone Ascent event on July 25–26, 2026, Trainers could again earn a Meteorite through free Timed Research—alongside a Rayquaza encounter and 400 Rayquaza Mega Energy—and another through US$4.99 paid Timed Research. Both required completion and reward claims by 8:00 p.m. local time on July 26, 2026. These past research releases are examples of how the item is distributed during featured events, not tasks that can still be claimed today.
Choosing a Rayquaza and keeping its other attack
Despite its name, Dragon Ascent is a Flying-type Charged Attack. Rayquaza can use it in battle while in its ordinary form as well as after Mega Evolving, dealing 140 power for 50 energy in Gyms and Raids, or 110 power for 45 energy in Trainer Battles while lowering Rayquaza's Defense by one stage. Teaching the move does not change a Rayquaza's IVs or power-up level, so appraise your candidates before spending a scarce Meteorite.
If your Rayquaza already knows an attack you want to keep, unlock a second Charged Attack before teaching Dragon Ascent and select the other slot for replacement. Unlocking that slot is a separate Candy and Stardust expense; the Meteorite does not provide it.
A Meteorite is consumed when it teaches the move to one Rayquaza. You do not spend another Meteorite for each subsequent Mega Evolution while that Rayquaza still knows Dragon Ascent. Additional Rayquaza each need their own move unlock and Mega Evolution investment.
