Gengar PvE Analysis

Recommended moves

⚔️ Raids

Gengar has been overtaken by both Mega Gengar and Shadow Gengar in Ghost-type damage output, but the regular form is still a solid attacker. It works well against easier Raid Bosses and can also be useful as a backup option in tougher Raids once your main team has fainted. Its poor bulk means dodging is strongly recommended.

🛡️ Gyms

Gengar hits hard, but it simply does not have the bulk needed to defend Gyms effectively. Like the rest of its evolution family, it is much better suited to attacking than defending.

Gengar PvP Analysis

Recommended moves

🔵 Great League

Gengar was once a popular spice pick thanks to its fast moveset and useful coverage, but the rise of stronger Ghost-types has pushed it much further down the rankings. Its extreme fragility also makes it difficult to use consistently.

It still picks up useful wins against Cramorant, Hisuian Electrode, Annihilape, and Jellicent, but loses too many important matchups to be considered reliable. Altaria, Melmetal, Shadow Ninetales, Mimikyu, and Tinkaton are just some of the Pokémon that give it major problems.

🟡 Ultra League

Gengar struggles here as well. It can still beat Giratina (Altered Forme) and a handful of other notable Pokémon, but its overall matchup spread is too limited. Dark- and Dragon-type Pokémon punish it heavily, while many neutral matchups also tend to go against it.

🟣 Master League

Gengar has no real place in the Master League. Its poor bulk and insufficient overall power leave it badly outmatched by the format's strongest Pokémon.
