Defenders are the Pokémon that soak damage outside of the Max phase and help you charge up the Max Energy meter. Important factors for these Pokémon include having high Defence and HP stats, being resistant to the moves from the opposing Pokémon, and also having a 0.5 second fast move which will charge the Max meter as fast as possible. These Pokémon will benefit from having their Guard and Spirit max moves levelled up.

How are we ranking best Attackers for Max Battles?

In order to calculate best Max Battle Counters for Spewpa (River Pattern), we calculate how much damage each eligible Pokémon does to Spewpa (River Pattern) during the Max Phase. We use Level 3 Max and Gigantamax Move stats for this calculation, and we assume ideal battle conditions – that there is no lag, and that the attacker will fire 3 consecutive Max Attacks. We order the attackers based on their damage output only. This may seem counter intuitive at first, but remember that in Max Battles you start with a tank/defender Pokémon, and you switch in the Attacker when you reach the Max Phase. You don't need to care about attacker survivability, the only thing you need to make sure is that you are dealing as much damage as possible during this phase.
