⚔️ Raids
Shadow Empoleon is the shadow form of the final stage of the water-type starter from Sinnoh, now with an additional steel type as well. It is one of the best water-type raid attackers, perhaps worthy of being one of the top ten best. It’s decent as a steel-type raid attacker as well.
As a water-type raid attacker, Shadow Empoleon is strong against ground, rock, and fire-type Pokémon. Whereas, as a steel-type raid attacker, it’s strong against rock, ice, and fairy-type Pokémon.

Drill Peck
Shadow Empoleon has a stellar list of type resistances as well as the powerful Hydro Cannon, creating a niche for itself in PvP, especially by checking types that Dragons struggle with 😎
Essentially, Shadow Empoleon is a reliable switch to Ice, Fairy, Steel, and Dragon types, making it easy to integrate into teams. Metal Sound, Hydro Cannon, and Drill Peck provide impressive coverage overall, giving it a nice offensive profile as well 🤺
🔵 Great League
The defensive benefits of the Water/Steel type combo cannot be emphasized enough, making Empoleon stand tall against some of the most formidable opponents in the Great League. It’s an attack-weighted Pokémon that relies heavily on quickly racking up damage on the opponent. Which is why access to the fast energy-generating Metal Sound is a huge boon to Empoleon, as it allows Empoleon to spam its charged attacks really, really fast.
This makes Empoleon one of the best Pokémon in the Great League. Though it should be noted that regular Empoleon actually outperforms Shadow Empoleon in the Great League in terms of pure win-loss ratio, but Shadow Empoleon definitely has its own unique use cases.
🟡 Ultra League
Shadow Empoleon was viable before in the Ultra League. Access to Metal Sound now makes it a real meta Pokémon for largely the same reasons as in the Great League. Metal Sound just makes Empoleon a lot spammier. There are also fewer fighting types to threaten Empoleon in the Ultra League now and more fairy types for it to target. Just bear in mind that the shadow variant noticeably outperforms the regular variant in the Ultra League.
🟣 Master League
Empoleon doesn't do well at all in the Master League.
