Recommended moves

Shadow Raikou is the undisputed best of the Johto Legendary Beasts. Period.

For starters, it is a superb Electric-type attacker, hovering among the very top of the meta. Only Mega Zeraora, Regieleki, and Mega Raichu Y inflict higher Electric-type damage than Shadow Raikou. This Beast's DPS is comparable to that of Shadow Electivire, but it is bulkier, making it the overall better pick.

Shadow Raikou's rampage doesn't end in the Electric-type meta. Because of its access to Aura Sphere, Shadow Raikou is also a premier Fighting-type attacker! In fact, its damage figures are even higher than Mega Heracross, Mega Manectric, and Shadow Machamp! By just unlocking a second Charged Attack for Shadow Raikou, you can make this Legendary do double duty in the Electric and Fighting type departments.

In a nutshell,

  • Thunder Shock and Wild Charge is its go-to moveset, boasting one of the highest damage figures in the Electric-type meta. Wild Charge's power and energy efficiency make it an easy pick over Thunder and Thunderbolt.

  • You may think of running Volt Switch as the Fast Attack, but with Thunder Shock's cooldown being only 0.5s (as opposed to the hefty 1.5s of Volt Switch), not only is Wild Charge used more frequently, but it also benefits more from Party Power.

  • We next come to Aura Sphere. It is a superb Fighting Charged Attack, and is strong enough to cement Shadow Raikou as a premier Fighting-type attacker. Not to mention, the Party Power synergy with Thunder Shock makes Aura Sphere Shadow Raikou deadly. Without a second thought, unlock Aura Sphere as a second Charged Attack for this Legendary.

  • Shadow Ball is viable and you can use Shadow Raikou as a makeshift attacker for Psychic and Ghost-type Raid Bosses (without taking super-effective damage in return, like other Ghosts). However, the display of power with Aura Sphere is so impressive that you would rather pick it over the decent performance it gives with Shadow Ball.

Recommended moves

🔵 Great League

Shadow Raikou is super rare in the Great League, but it packs a serious punch. Raikou isn't as consistent as other Electric types, such as Charjabug, due to its offense-oriented stat product, but with careful gameplay and with shield advantage, it can actually handle much of the current meta, though its inconsistent performance holds it back. Best suited to limited metas.

Aside from beating all Water and Flying types weak to Electric-type moves, it also handles Wigglytuff, Grumpig, Furret, Ninetales, and Sableye (both regular and Shadow).

#### 🟡 Ultra League

Shadow Raikou is formidable in the Ultra League, taking out all the premier Water and Flying types, and also Steelix, Shadow Drapion, Shadow Dusknoir, Tinkaton, Florges, Ampharos, and Cresselia.

It's deadlier without shields, wherein Aura Sphere helps it muscle through Cobalion, Guzzlord, Lickilicky, Malamar, and Shadow Ampharos.

It's quite good in the (2-2) shield scenario as well, where Thunder Shock’s quick energy gains help it blast two Aura Sphere and a Wild Charge to take down Annihilape (regular as well as Shadow). A superb performance across all shield situations makes Shadow Raikou a phenomenal addition to the Ultra League meta. ⚡

#### 🟣 Master League

Shadow Raikou falls short in the Master League, as its low bulk and insufficient power against Dragon Pokémon make it miss out on true relevance. It takes down many Water and Flying types, and also a couple of Steel types like Crowned Shield Zamazenta, Metagross, Melmetal, but ultimately, it cannot take on the high-end, stronger Legendaries of this format.
