Mega Metagross is one of the leading Steel-type attackers in Pokémon GO, combining high offense as well as impressive bulk to function as a total package. Despite great stats and a Psychic subtyping, Mega Metagross isn't widely used as a Psychic-type attacker.

Unlike other Pseudo Legendary Mega Evolutions, Mega Metagross resists damage from every Pokémon type it counters in its primary role as a Steel-type attacker (Fairy, Ice and Rock). Let's break down how this iconic monster fares in both its typings.

⚙️ Steel type

Thanks to Meteor Mash, Mega Metagross has cemented itself among the top Steel Pokémon in the game but is it the best? Not really.

The Steel-type department is spearheaded by Zacian (Crowned Sword) and Zamazenta (Crowned Shield), both boasting incredible damage output and their signature attacks, Behemoth Blade and Behemoth Bash respectively.

Mega Metagross is surpassed by another powerhouse, which tragically shares the same Steel and Psychic type combo: Dusk Mane Necrozma. This Legendary is better than Mega Metagross is every way, be it offense or defense. Even in Party Power, DM Necrozma is better than Metagross as it has a 0.5s Fast Attack (Metal Claw) compared to Mega Metagross’ slower Bullet Punch (1s).

The one asset Mega Metagross brings to the table is its Mega Boost. Add the fact that Mega Metagross is tanky and resists Fairy, Ice, and Rock type attacks, it can keep the coveted boosts running for quite a while. That said, you should stick to Dusk Mane and in the same role if you have one at a high level.

👁️ Psychic type

Mega Metagross is unfortunately not as dominant as a Psychic type. Even when you don't consider absolute units like Mega, Shadow, and regular Mewtwo, Mega Metagross is surpassed by Mega Alakazam, Mega Gardevoir, Mega Gallade, Mega Latios, and Hoopa Unbound in DPS.

On the other hand, Mega Metagross is one of the bulkiest Psychic types and against Poison-type Raid Bosses (which it triple resists), it can be an asset. Sadly, it has to compete with Primal Groudon and Mega Garchomp in this situation.

⭐ Perks

Meta Metagross is a solid Pokémon and Mega Evolution, and compared to its competition in the Steel type, it is cheaper and easier to power up. As such, it is definitely a good idea to keep a high-level Mega Metagross in handy, making it quite dominant against Fairy, Ice, and Rock Raid Bosses. It is a neat attacker against Poison types as well. But ultimately, it is underwhelming as a Psychic type.

If you have Steel Pokémon like Zacian (Crowned Sword), Zamazenta (Crowned Shield), or Dusk Mane Necrozma powered up, you are better off devoting your time and resources to those powerhouses instead of Mega Metagross.
