Mega Heracross boasts a phenomenal Attack stat and decent bulk, making it a strong choice as an attacker in Pokémon GO. It has access to solid movesets for both its Bug and Fighting typing, resulting in it being a top choice for both types.

Mega Heracross is a top tier attacker for both Bug and Fighting types. For Bug types, its Mega Evolved competition includes Mega Beedrill, Mega Pinsir, and Mega Scizor, but it outclasses all non-Mega Evolved Bug attackers. For Fighting types, its Mega Evolved competition includes Mega Blaziken, Mega Medicham, Mega Lopunny, Mega Lucario, and Mega Gallade, as well as the future Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Chesnaught, and Mega Hawlucha, but it outclasses all non-Mega Evolved Fighting attackers.

Seeing as the stats and moves are solid, Mega Heracross’s performance is largely based on its unique typing. It is currently the only dual Bug and Fighting type Mega Evolution, so it carves out its niche in certain matchups based on this typing and the way this combination can sport key resistances based on said dual typing.

First off, if your opponent has any type of Flying type attack, even as a coverage move, you want to steer clear of Mega Heracross, who has a double weakness to these attacks thanks to Bug and Fighting both being weak to Flying. A stray Aerial Ace will take your Mega Evolution out of the battle in an instant.

Bug types aren’t typically the most sought after attackers in Pokémon GO, but there are a few key type combinations that sport a double weakness, allowing Bug type attackers to shine in certain matchups. Bug types match up strongly against Psychic, Grass, and Dark type Pokémon, so offensively Mega Heracross will match up positively using its Bug moves. All three other Bug Mega Evolutions, being Mega Beedrill, Mega Pinsir, and Mega Scizor, are also powerful options. However, Mega Heracross’s Fighting typing makes the matchups a bit more interesting.

Against Grass type opponents, Mega Heracross matches up offensively the same as the others, and since it has the highest TDO, it would seem like the winner. However, all three other Bug Mega Evolutions have double resistances to Grass moves, meaning that in some cases they may end up dealing more damage as a result of living longer. For this case, it’ll come down to secondary typings and movesets of the opponent. Mega Heracross uniquely resists Dark moves compared to most other Bug type Pokémon, making it the go-to option for Bug types in these matchups.

While it is offensively strong against Psychic types, however, it is also weak to their attacks thanks to its Fighting type, making it a weaker choice compared to other Bug types in these matchups. While it would likely still fare better than Mega Beedrill, who shares this weakness but is much frailer, Mega Pinsir takes neutral damage and Mega Scizor resists the hits thanks to its Steel typing. Combined with the fact that Psychic types get hard countered by Dark types, Mega Heracross probably isn’t the best choice for these battles.

Overall, Mega Heracross’s typing allows it to outshine other Bug attackers in some matchups while also dropping it lower in others. Steer clear of using it against Psychic types. Against Grass types it can be solid, being slightly worse in some scenarios but still very powerful. It’s claim to fame comes against Dark type opponents, where Mega Heracross stands clear above the rest.

Fighting type attackers are typically much more sought after in Pokémon GO, and Mega Heracross can again carve out a niche thanks to its unique typing. However, it has some steep competition in this department, namely Mega Lucario and Mega Blaziken. However, it does outperform the rest in even matchups. Fighting types match up well offensively against Normal, Rock, Steel, Dark, and Ice type Pokémon. Out of these types, the only matchup affected defensively is against Rock types, which Mega Heracross takes neutral damage from thanks to the Bug typing and as such drops in effectiveness in these matchups. Interestingly, Mega Blaziken also shares this unique interaction with Rock types, but it gains a resistance to Steel. Mega Lucario wins in this department, with its Steel typing helping it resist the other 4 types that Fighting types already don’t resist.

While Mega Heracross’s Bug typing doesn’t cover any of the Fighting type’s weaknesses, it does provide some unique resistances to some strong offensive types, such as Ground and Fighting, as well as stray Grass moves. Steel and Normal types in particular tend to have coverage moves of these types, such as Earthquake or Close Combat, which Mega Heracross can uniquely resist compared to other Fighting types. Fighting type moves deal Super-Effective damage to Mega Lucario, while Ground type attacks are strong against both Mega Lucario and Mega Blaziken, making Mega Heracross the best choice in these unique cases. Again, it struggles in certain matchups that a Fighting type would normally succeed in, but can also stand above the rest in others. I would say it is overall outperformed by Mega Lucario but can stand out in certain cases, and it is generally a coin toss with Mega Blaziken. Not too shabby!

Some of the Raid Bosses that Mega Heracross matches up uniquely well against are Cobalion, Darkrai, Mega Steelix, and Mega Lopunny, along with Urshifu Single Strike if it ever gets added to Raids. It has overall strong matchups against the likes of Regigigas, Mega Sceptile and Mega Aggron. It also has strong matchups against powerful Pokémon from later installments such as Wo-Chien, Ting-Lu, Ogerpon, and Terapagos. Mega Heracross will likely maintain its strong performance through future generations!

Overall, Mega Heracross’s strong moves and stats allow it to be a generally strong choice both as a Bug type and Fighting type attacker. Its unique typing allows it to outshine its peers in some matchups while falling short in others. Mega Heracross is probably strongest as a Bug type attacker, although you won’t be upset with its Fighting type performance. While it has some steep competition, you’ll never be upset to be using it. Knowing when to use Mega Heracross is key, but doing so can easily provide you an edge in battle!
